The Truth About Botox

Facts About Botox At Ritual Beauty Salon In Alresford, Hampshire

BOTOX. We’ve all heard of it.

Many of us have tried it too, many more than you might realise! So let us tell you a little about what it is, how it works, what the pitfalls are and the complications so that you can decide whether to give it a go or not.

What Is Botox?

Botox is a brand name for the bacteria called Botulinum Toxin. Other well known brand names are Alluzience, Azzalure or Bocouture.

Botulinum Toxin is found in nature, but in it’s purified and diluted form it is approved to be used in facial aesthetic treatments.

How Does Botox Work?

To explain how it works, I’ve got a little exercise for you to do…

Head on over to a mirror. Now give yourself a really cheesy grin. This would be a really great moment for some powerful and positive affirmations by the way… See those laughter lines and crinkles around the eyes? These are called Dynamic Lines.

Keep looking in the mirror with a neutral face. If you can still see some lines, these are called Static Lines.

Repeat this exercise with frowning / looking surprised etc. We just liked the idea of you grinning at yourself in the mirror, family members wondering what on earth was going on.

Back to Botox. Dynamic Lines, those lines that are apparent when we move our face in expression or through talking, over time will turn into Static Lines which are apparent all the time. These age us.

Botox relaxes our muscles, so that when we frown or grin those lines do not appear. This means they can’t turn into Static Lines.

Botox effectively pauses time for us.

The Truth About Botox

As it is much easier to “prevent than correct” many people have been starting anti-wrinkle injections at a younger and younger age in order to delay signs of aging.

For example, if your Nan, Mum and Aunt all have prominent frown lines, you may feel it’s likely that you will form these. A bit of preventative Botox or Baby Botox can drastically delay those lines appearing.

It is also a quick, almost pain free procedure with zero downtime and fast results.

But there are downsides too.

As with any injection there is the risk of infection, allergic reaction and side effects such as headaches, bruising or swelling at the injection site, as well as some more serious side effects.

As each individual’s face is unique, although rare, you can experience eyebrow lifting like Dr Spock, or eyebrow ptosis or eyebrow droop. Both are relatively easy to correct, but frustrating nevertheless.

Botox is not permanent. The results last between 3-6 months depending on person to person, metabolism and other factors. The good thing about that is, if you don’t like the results they will fade away and you will go back to normal in time. But if you do like the results you’ll have to have a repeat procedure bi-annually.
