Pregnancy & Skincare At RITUAL Skin & Beauty Clinics In Hampshire

Some women seem to bask in the glow of pregnancy. Unfortunately, not everyone feels that way. Some women experience acne and dark marks caused by the hormonal fluctuations. But, knowing what to do when you are pregnant can be really tricky!

We know that certain medications can affect foetal growth, well the unfortunately certain oils and skincare ingredients can have an impact too. So here’s a little guide to what you can use and what you should avoid during pregnancy and breast-feeding.

Pregnancy Skincare Tips in Hampshire

Pregnancy Skincare Tips

Retinol – We know that topical retinoids are incredibly effective in treating acne and improving skin texture and tone, but these are a Category X meaning this is a no-go in pregnancy. Although the amount absorbed into the skin is low, we still recommend to avoid to be completely safe.

Looking for an alternative? Topical antibiotics from your GP may be an option.

Azelaic Acid – My secret ingredient for controlling my rosacea, which co-incidentally irreversibly flared up during my first pregnancy. And the good news, is yes this is safe for use during pregnancy, the only guidance is keep it to a maximum 10% concentration.

Salicylic Acid – There’s not an exfoliator on the shelves that doesn’t have this incredibly popular and effective ingredient in it! And luckily it is completely safe during pregnancy yay! A 2% maximum concentration is recommended.

Hyperpigmentation Agents such as Hydroquinone – As mentioned above, melasma is a type of pigmentation and it is common in pregnancy. This is due to the hormonal fluctuations. You might notice a line of pigmented skin on your stomach (linea nigra) or patches around the bikini, underarm, or upper lip. It can be alarming, but honestly please don’t worry. More often than not these areas of pigmentation fade away after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Hyperpigmentation agents are absorbed substantially more than other skincare ingredients, and whilst studies are limited in this area, the general consensus is to avoid during pregnancy.

Self Tan / Spray Tan – So DHA, the colour additive that comes from natural plant sources, is absorbed into the body but at such low amounts that it is deemed to be of little concern. However, we recommend to avoid during the first trimester as a precaution.
